c60: The Complete Home Recordings

Tonight I'll use as an excuse to play my favorite artists, playing songs that were recorded at home -- often without the intention of letting anyone else hear. Nick Drake, Vic Chesnutt, Jeff Buckley and more. Got suggestions? Call the station when I'm on. Or leave a suggestion below.

Midnight-3 a.m. EST. WCBN.

c60: Jesus Freak Show -- Heaven On Their Minds

Ok, here's the setlist of the first hour of my show. In retrospect I probably should've saved the listener's request for Frank Zappa's "Jesus Thinks You're a Jerk" until after the main set since, while it could be said to be pro-Jesus, didn't really fit with the 60s-70s theme (it was recorded in 1988).

Would take me a little bit of work to get the audio up, but I will if there's interest.

Looks like I neglected to name everything I played originally when I was making the playlist. Hopefully this is accurate

The Byrds, "Jesus is Just All Right," Ballad of Easy Rider
Jack Van Impe, Excerpt from The Hooked Generation
Ralph Carmichael, Kurt Kaiser, "Natural High," Natural High
The Gospel Couriers, "Turn Me On, Light Me Up," More of the Gospel Couriers
Dust and Ashes, "Talkin Jesus Freak Blues," The Lives We Share
"If God is Dead," I Wonder
The New World "Bridge Over Troubled Water"
Merv Rosell, Excerpt from Vietnam Voices
Frank Zappa, "Jesus Thinks You're a Jerk," Broadway the Hard Way
"Heaven On Their Minds," Jesus Christ Superstar
"The Head Muggis," The Carpenter
All Saved Freak Band, "Messed Up," Brainwashed
Ralph Carmichael, "I Looked for Love," I Looked for Love
Cliff Barrows, "The Man," Exciting Songs on the Way
Campus Life Presents, "Jesus Band" Friends
Godspell, "Day by Day"

Here's some pictures of funky albums, not necessarily all which I played:

c60: Jesus Freak Show

I used to live in Holland, MI and I used to pick through the copious thrift stores there and start collecting interesting looking lps -- largely religious, due to the area that I was picking in. A genre of particular attraction to me was christian music of the 60s and 70s specifically designed to be attractive to the disaffected youth of the day. See the above picture.

So I'm going to play a bunch of the records I collected, plus some general "Jesus Freak" music of the day. I might have to pull out Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar too.

I hope you find this enjoyable. I wanted to stress that I don't mean to promote nor denigrate Christianity by my choice of songs tonight. I could choose a variety of naive, awkward pro-drug music embracing Eastern mysticism and the occult from the counterculture as well -- but you've been hearing those songs on the radio for years . . . :)

Friday-Saturday midnight-3 a.m. EST. Listen?

No show on Friday, but listen anyway! And listen to the Latin Hour on Sunday. . .

I will be trading slots with Chris this week -- he'll be doing my Boojum Pudding slot and I'll be doing his Latin Hour on Sunday from 1-2.

Oooh is it a dumb joke to just play nothing but songs in Latin.

That's probably dumb.

I'll stick to Latin America.
